The beauty of books, is tell audiences history of physical book, let people know how beauty of paper book. this documentary can attract people to take a physical book to read and feel it. it is so amazing. so I think maybe I can create something in window of bookstore to engage people go into bookstore to find and read books.

A new way to create window display for bookstore

based on my previous research, I want to create a different window display for bookstore - Waterstones. it don't have recommend books and it is dynamic which can interact with people. also, it should bring some interesting meaning for people, not only to introduce and display books. I hope passer-by have fun when they pass by bookstore's window, which as same as fashion window display.
so I got the idea is like below video which I created

in window, just put a book in center and combine spot
light and screen, to create a dynamic scene.

and there are 2 idea for screen content in background.
- first one: 'world'
background: in the beginning shows word, Waterstones, to present brand identity, the message of zooming in the Block capital "W", it means to go into/immerse books' world.

                                                                      video example

- second: secret & mystery
background: physical vs. digital book
this idea bases on the situation of book in recent.
(relative articles links: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-15149546)
the physical bookstores are threaten by online shop and e-book, I try to compare both to express the "one" idea. Hope people to think the mystery of ‘one’ between physical and digital.

Fashion window display VS. Bookstore

Fashion window display is very prosperous in UK, the famous example of Harrods and Selfridges have various and colourful window displays in UK. I chosen bookstore as my project object, the reason is book belong to culture, bookstore can represent the level of culture in a country. but in the 21st century, electronic book is creating the biggest upheaval in publishing, a amount of book shops are closing. Bookstores are under threat online shop.
so I have compared the window display of fashion with book, to find out their general and specific character. as a reference to relieve this situation from design aspect, even though the power is small.

As we know, the function of shop window is displaying productin Fashion shops window shows new season clothes and Bookstores recommend books.

But I think there is a little different between cloth and book shop. when people see the window of fashion shops, watching and decision happen at same time. But to bookshops, most of the time, when book cover catch pepople’s eyes, they need to read book, then they will decide whether go to the store buy it. So people can decide instantly when they watch cloth, but to the bookshop, just a few people know they need this book when they glimps window.

And I have researched ordinary bookstores in high street, the window display often put recommend books and set print advertising in window.

bookstores in different country

But it has a problem is sometimes, a shop displays various products, for example, relative to cloth shops, it is easy to see when people pass by window quikely. But to bookshop, those books are small, it is hard to pay attention on them.

In summary, we can see, actually, this frame, like cloth shop, to display products in window is not more effective for bookshopMeanwhile,  with the development of digital product, fashion window display not only trying to create a beautiful scene to display produce for commerce, but designer also create funny display to bring some fun in our life.

like Studio xag create future map store for Selfridges, it didn't show the cloth, all the things made by paper.

other one is BAOBAO ISSEY MIYAKE window display, it is so lovely and interesting, even though people don't buy it, but people can remember this brand rapidly.

                                                           ELTTOB TEP Bag Installation

so I think putting recommend books in window is not a useful way to engage people’s experience.

Andrew Stanton: The clues to a great story

I saw this speech from TED. Andrew Stanton is a filmmaker, he share what he know about storytelling, "staring at the end and working back to the beginning."  his idea is so interested, he think a story can catch people attention is giving audience two plus two, don't need give all in the same time. in his point, he want to go out the form of traditional story telling to create better story. so his team think maybe to create a story is based on no songs, no "I want" moment, no happy village, no love story and no villain.
therefore, this idea can give me some inspiration to think a new way for bookstore window display.
